The Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies is delighted to invite applications for our first digital fellowship (one fellowship), starting in August 2026. This fellowship will support a researcher in collaborating with a member of CIGS based at the School of Sociology and Social Policy, either through a co-authored publication or by contributing to the development of a grant application that could expand the collaboration beyond the visit.
This application is open to candidates from any career stage and any part of the world. We particularly encourage Early Career Researchers (individuals within eight years of their PhD viva) from the so-called Global South, or members of the global majority, to apply. We acknowledge that the political economy of access to digital resources (usually behind paywalls) produces unequal circulation of knowledge.
Benefits
- You will be officially granted the status of digital visiting fellow at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies and the School of Sociology and Social Policy. The duration of this host will be open for the academic year from August 2026 to August 2027, at the latest.
- You will have access to the same digital resources available to other visiting fellows, including the library, digital data sources, and digital archives.
- You must collaborate with one member of CIGS SSP to work together towards the development of either a co-authored publication or to set up an application for funding to expand the collaboration.
- The fellowship will cover a total of 1000£ of research expenses. The digital fellowship will be responsible for presenting a valid invoice and be able to receive the payment via bank transfer.
Eligibility
- The applicants must identify at least one member of the academic staff of CIGS placed in the School of Sociology and Social Policy. Applicants should approach the proposed collaborator in advance and agree the application with them in principle.
- The selected applicant must be employed by a research/HE institution during the period of the fellowship in any part of the world. This can be either a part-time or a full-time contract, but it must be with an institution throughout the fellowship.
- To be able to receive a payment via bank transfer and to provide a valid invoice.
Application process:
The deadline for the application is the 5th June of 2026, 12 pm (UK time). Applications must be submitted using the following form
You will be required to provide a title, select who you are working with, a CV (max 2 pages), a short description of the project, a timeline, proposed outputs and a budget. To write the budget, please see our research expenses policies.
The pair team will define a timeline of delivery of the outcome and must present at the end of the funded period a clear result of the work conducted (e.g. a first draft for a grant application and/or a structured outline of the publication, as well as a final timeline for the final delivery of the outcome). The fellow will meet once per month with their CIGS pair to discuss revising the project delivery. You will be invited to do an oral presentation of your project and receive feedback from other members of CIGS.
The payment is due to cover research expenses necessary to support fieldwork or to establish relationships for a grant application. Applicants will be required to submit a justification for the requested funding, with a maximum of £1000.
As digital fellows, applicants will have access to the university’s digital and library resources during the grant period (or longer, if justified in the application).
Result: Results will be communicated around two weeks after the application closes. We will not be able to provide feedback to applicants.
